The sets that make up the top 1984 rookie cards include Star Company basketball cards from 1984-85, Topps, Donruss, and Fleer baseball cards from 1984 (including the 1984 Topps Traded set), and the 1984-85 Topps hockey set, and last but not least, the 1984 Topps football card set.   Traded Sets are great for having extended rookies that are not in the regular issue set for that particular year, and for the 1984 Topps Traded set that is the best place here to look for that.
Here we will be begin with the top rookie cards from 1984.  There is a wide selection of cards throughout this year's cards, and it may be the best rookie year in sports from the 1980's.  It is difficult to be able to obtain and afford all of the rookies from this year of cards, but many are hall of famers and some are very affordable.
Michael Jordan has his rookie card first in 1984-85 Star Company basketball, while his 1986-87 Fleer is also considered to be a rookie card as the 1984-85 is an xrc (such as in traded sets).  The 1984-85 Star Company Michael Jordan rookie card, #101 in the set, is worth thousands of dollars, and even more in high graded condition (such as a mint or gem mint).  Star Company basketball cards from 1984-85 also contain the rookie cards of Akeem Olajuwon, #237, John Stockton #235, Charles Barkley #202, an Olympic rookie year card of Michael Jordan (#195 which is much more affordable than his xrc) as well as Craig Ehlo and Sam Perkins.

A 1984 Topps Don Mattingly rookie card is a great choice.  The former New York Yankees great had many great years and although he may not make the hall of fame, his rookie card is very popular with collectors.  Darryl Strawberry rookie cards are also included in 1984 baseball card sets.  These are from Topps, Donruss, and Fleer, with 1984 Donruss baseball cards usually being the most valuable, followed by Fleer, then by Topps (at least currently).
Here is a quick list of cards you should check for in the 1980's.
